Essaims météoritiques

Chaque année à la même période, l'orbite de la Terre croise des nuages de poussières laissés par des comètes. Cela provoque des essaims météoritiques, ou des « pluies » d'étoiles filantes, qui semblent toutes provenir par un effet de perspective du même point du ciel. On appelle ce point imaginaire le radiant. Certaines étoiles filantes ne semblent pas venir du radiant, ce sont des grains de poussière n'appartenant pas au nuage traversé, on les appelle des sporadiques.

 

Ces pluies périodiques d'étoiles filantes portent un nom dérivé de la constellation où se trouve leur radiant. Ainsi, les Perséides (visibles en août) ont leur radiant dans la constellation de Persée. L'essaim des Léonides donne lieu à de véritables pluies de météorites.
